No, I'm not Dutch, I'm from Slovenia (but my dad's Croatian, so I've got a hefty load of Balkan genes), but I've been living with my Frisian BF for 13 years now, so my kids are half Dutch. So whenever a Dutch embassy throws a Sinterklaasfeest for the kids, we take them there. I want them to absorb some of their dad's culture and the older one speaks quite decent Dutch. The little one - not so much, he doesn't hang around his dad enough to learn. He understands some, but he doesn't speak much. Things improve drastically as soon as oma and opa visit for a week, then he hears more Dutch and he learns quite a few words. Oh,well... can't have it all. :) Sinterklaas is such a nice tradition - we watch Sinterklaasjournal and have a CD with songs in the car so they get really psyched up before the event. And of course, we watch the whole thing on TV and they love it how every year there's some plot or scandal or something going wrong before it goes right again. I think the highlight of their celebration is that their dad gets a "zakje zout" in his shoe every year and they don't. ;) We have the holiday here as well, but it's much more scary - there are proper "devils" going around the house with St. Nicholas and kids are dead scared (which is also good sometimes!) - if you type this word into google, you might see how this looks like over here: parklji I hope you can sleep at night! ;)
